Great excursion ideas for your trip to the Maldives

I just returned from an incredible trip to the Maldives and man, do I miss the place already. An archipelagic state in the Indian subcontinent of Asia, the Maldives has more than 1000 islands, with about 185 inhabited. I visited one of the local islands, namely Thulusdhoo, about 25 minutes by speedboat from Male.

If you are planning to visit this beautiful place be sure to add these excursions to your itinerary.

Snorkelling

Ok, so this may seem like a no brainer, however I had to add it to the list as this is truly one of the most spectacular snorkelling I have ever done. The island of Thulusdhoo is surrounded by the most insanely beautiful snorkelling spots. For around 20 USD per person, we went out for the day to do some snorkelling at the Coral Garden and the Aquarium. Definitely something you’ll do on several occasions during your stay.

Surfing

The island of Thulusdhoo is well-known for attracting surfers from all over the globe. As a beginner surfer this wasn’t the best place for me to try it out, however you’ll be able to book a lesson near bikini beach. We went out to some of the more popular spots and the reefs made it a bit dangerous for those not knowing wat they were doing, however the surfing is incredible and it was so cool to see the ‘pros’ in action. If you are keen to try out surfing, I’d suggest booking a lesson to ensure that you start out at a spot that is safe and practical for beginners.

Watersports

If you’re a fan of water sports, the Maldives will leave you coming back for more. With endless activities to choose from, you definitely won’t be bored. We decided to go out for the day and do some wake boarding, which is really hard by the way, however there is something for everyone, ranging from paragliding, water skiing, SUP and the list goes on. We made use of Ref Cool Marine and they went out of their way for us. These guys will hook you up with transfers to-and-from the airport, excursions and many other activities. We negotiated a package with them to include a few excursions in one and ended up getting a great deal.

The Sand Bank

Initially I did not think that I would spend money on going to a sand bank in the middle of nowhere, however this turned out to be one of my best days. If you want to experience the true beauty of the Maldives, this is something you have to do. We went out to the sand bank by speedboat and spent an entire morning just lying on the beach and taking in the beauty of it all. We were lucky to be there quite early and were the only people on this little deserted island for most of the day. Be sure to watch the video at the top of this article to get an idea of how magical it really is.

If you are considering a trip to the Maldives, now is a great time to do so!
